Making a Difference
St.
Francis' humble and compassionate response to the needs of the less fortunate
of society continues to burn strong in Friars. Today there is hardly a
place on this vast globe in which Franciscans have not made a difference.
In addition to ministering in parishes and operating missions, in recent
years, they have built apartment complexes for the disabled, began rehabilitation
programs for drug addicts, build orphanages and daycare cent ers
for the young and nursing homes for the elderly, improved education, and
worked with the United Nations on peace and justice initiatives, to name
but a few of their acts of love. Few boundaries exist to the type of ministry
friars are asked to do as servers of God and the Church. Friars place
their talents and skills at the service of God and their sisters and brothers
of the world.
Community Rooted in Love
St.
Francis and his early followers stayed together in shelters for the sake
of support and prayers. Today almost 800 years later, friars continue
this meaningful tradition by living in communities (called friaries) that
are rooted in love. This family-like atmosphere provides a channel where
not only prayers and meals are shared, but also where the friars relate
the joys, sorrows and excitement of their lives and ministries and, in
doing so, find support, friendship and encouragement from one another.
