Pastoral Ministry
The Franciscan friars of St. Anthony of Padua Province live out the call
to mini sterial
service in many different ways. One of the main ways is parish ministry.
From the founding of the Province in 1906 to the present day, the friars
have served the Catholic Church as pastors, parochial vicars and pastoral
ministers in parish communities throughout the northeastern and southeastern
regions of the United States. Originally founded to minister to Polish
immigrants, the Province of St. Anthony of Padua gradually extended its
pastoral care to non-ethnic parishes as well, and has recently begun to
explore its ability to minister to newly arriving immigrants from Mexico
and Latin America.
A majority of friars who minister in parishes are ordained priests and
therefore have the privilege and responsibility
of providing sacramental ministry to the people they serve. As priests
they are also called upon to exercise the ministry of preaching. Whether
ordained or not, all friars involved in parish ministry are called upon
to pray with the people they serve, to offer them spiritual guidance and
support, to provide for their religious education and to minister to the
sick and the dying. Like St. Francis of Assisi, the friars of St. Anthony
Province offer the people they serve the compassion and the love of Christ.
